Moody Man 05:56
A moody man and his moody woman Waited til the coast was clear And looking across at each other Said what the hell are we doing here She said what you doing to me honey You’re making me cry all day I try to understand your anger But you just push me away That moody man took a hold of his woman And speaking to her tenderly He said You see that big star in the sky babe Well it’s been putting heavy vibes on me I try to get my nose off of the runway But you know I’m losing altitude fast So hold on to your difficult darling Cos with you I want to last And I know it’s all gonna be different In another little slice of time Oh the egg on my plate is coming sunny side up We’re gonna be over the moon I said we’re gonna over the moon That moody man and his moody woman Stood on the doorstep and waved bye bye And gently closed the door behind them and they wondered how they both were saved.

Blind Jane 02:44
Blind Jane Whose eyes can only feel The wind and rain Whose sun is dark Whose moon the same But how her smile puts me to shame Blind Jane Me I ride a cock horse I follow the easiest course Back home, back home I measure my worth As if everything on the earth Was my own, my own Me I play the odds I curse the Gods I curse the breeze Curse the very sky above the trees Fighting every day in troubles way I’m troubled grey But when I look at you Everything seems kind of blue Blind Jane Whose eyes can only feel The wind and rain Whose sun is dark Whose moon the same But how her smile puts me to shame Blind Jane

Somebody 04:25
When you need somebody to be near you When you need somebody you can trust When you need somebody to believe you When you need somebody that much Why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call to me When you want somebody to be near you When you want somebody you can trust When you want somebody to believe you When you want somebody that much Why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call to me When you’re down on your luck The only way you can possibly go is up When you need somebody When you want somebody When you need somebody could be anybody, Got to be somebody So why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call to me Cos I need somebody to be near me Yes I need somebody I can trust Oh I need somebody to believe me I need somebody that much So why don’t you call, call to me Said why don’t you call, call to me Why don’t you call to me Somebody Ah

Well I ride on the wings of the beautiful bird Over the hill and far away I stand with the kings in their castles superb And watch their children play And like a child in need of nothing Except the sky I don’t know how, I don’t know when But if I lay eyes on that girl again Hey this time she’ll be more than a friend And more than a rolling day Well I stand on the shoulders of Plato and Freud Their point of view to see But if all this is true than all that must be void How else could it be? And I for one am sure of nothing Except that I I don’t know how, I don’t know when But if I catch sight of that girl again Hey this time she’ll be more than a friend And more than a rolling day Well the wind howls high and the sky sits low The ocean is standing up And the time draws nigh when the world will know It’s running out of luck But time and tide they know no reason And I I don’t know how, I don’t know when But if I lay eyes on that girl again Hey this time she’ll be more than a friend And more than a rolling day Hey more than a rolling day And in the castles are rascals and thieves dressed in gold Laughing at me out in the cold

Nothing Says 04:11
This place is cold And sunless as The arctic winter’s night I don’t get many letters From the west Nothing says Goodbye Like a tear Nothing says Goodbye Like a tear ah, ah My love was like A madman’s dream Of Cairo in the snow I skated on The thin ice of your lakes Nothing says Hello Like a smile Nothing says Hello Like a smile ah, ah And now my only life is here Amidst the broken swans And all my tracks Were covered long ago Nothing says Goodbye Like a tear Nothing says Goodbye Like a tear ah, ah
6.
Promises 03:42
Promises, promises Made out to last Promises, promises Fragile as glass You said you’d be here And the clock wasn’t fast In the morning In the morning Cinderella expects And so do we all Warm invitations To come to the ball And I’m gonna be there If I have to crawl In the morning In the morning Doesn’t it register somewhere inside Just how close to disaster we sail Everyone’s thinking Your battleship’s sinking But you know you’ll stay on the rails You’re gonna stay on the rails Promises, promises Easily made Crackle like radios Constantly played Promises, promises Made out to fade In the morning In the morning

Formica 03:09
I carve you in formica So surrealist and cool And pan your lovely features For the penguin and the fool For the penguin and the fool I miss you evanescent smile The Sanskrit that you taught The wind in lovely Hampshire woods And the headlands where you walked And the headlands where you walked A fool, a fool I am a fool for you A queen, a queen You are a queen for me The sea calls out its numbers And you write them in the sand And schools of whales approach the shore To gently kiss your hand To gently kiss your hand A fool, a fool I am a fool for you A queen, a queen You are a queen for me A fool, a fool I am a fool for you A queen, a queen You are a queen

The storm is passing by Hello brand new summer sky I’m standing in your glow Nowhere else to go For I’m there anyway Not a care at the end of the day I love the way she’ll come to me I love the way she’ll come do me When nothing’s worth the pain And winning is just a losing game I’m hanging on her smile Helpless as a child In the dark, in the light, In the day In the dead of the night I love the way she’ll come to me I love the way she’ll come do me And I love the way I’m alive for today And to hell with tomorrow No reason better than the one you just had Cos I’m there anyway Not a care at the end of the day I love the way she’ll come to me I love the way she’ll come do me

Regrets 04:27
You once said to me That the wings they were a symbol of some thing You had lost deep inside I regret I regret, I regret, I regret Suffer not the child Remaining where the white dove can’t remain You are locked in your pain I regret I regret, I regret I regret I can read you just like a crossword Five across and One down I’m down Rip up your picture in Harpers But don’t forget to Put up the sacred heart There was no mistake In the broken road you felt You had to take There was no There was no mistake I regret I regret, I regret, I regret You once said to me That the wings they were a symbol of some thing You had lost deep inside I regret I regret, I regret, I regret Yes I really do regret

Well my woman blows the whistle for the ten-fifteen to Euston And if she once had some principles well now she’s loosed ‘em go So’s she could know how it feels pulling strokes and making deals Setting spokes inside the wheels of the Utopian Express And then my lover she’s the mother of my hopes and aspirations She’s the keeper of my morals and my expectations She’s a virgin in forgiveness and a whore in self-destruction And a master of that moment when you’re hanging on her word And at night I dream I’m falling from her thirty storey window As she pushes me and cries out God have mercy on my soul Then she flies into the darkness with her make-up man beside her And I stand helplessly watching as the gulf gets wider Crying please take your greed and leave me lone I’ve enough of my own And when Paradise’s Garden isn’t where you would be Listen to me For the devil is alive and well and living on Manhattan He’s committed to a scientific course of action And his legions they are many and they answer unto no one And their promise is as heavy as the fog upon LA Oh but the treadmill is for losers, better leave your pride behind you And go hide beneath your shadow lest the good Lord find you And say Mind you, now what you doing, have you spent all that I gave you Are you broken now in spirit as your minutes are in years Or are you waiting for the scientist to come up with an answer And to cut away the cancer of your discontented mind Well Frankenstein’s in town and I can lead you to his window Where Cinderella dances in eternal limbo Crying help, save yourself if you can And your fairy tale land And now Paradise has started slipping back to the sea Listen to me

Hold on to love it’s a simple love It’s a love that cannot be denied Hold on to love it’s a simple love And it’s gonna show the reason why Me I think you’re really fine Never get a minute when you go away From my mind Hold on to me I’m a lonely man And you give me all I really need Hold on to you you’re a lovely girl And you give me all I really need Hold on to you you’re a lovely girl And I love deep in word and deed You I think you’re really fine Never get a minute when you go away From my mind Asked me what I was doing I said I didn’t know I said the garden we grew in That’s where I want to grow So we swam in the sunset And we danced in the sea I knew that I’d have to love you I knew you had to hold I knew you had to hold Hold on Hold on to love it’s a crazy love It’s a love that cannot be denied Hold on to love it’s a crazy love And it’s got to show the reason why Me I think you really fine Never get a minute when you go away From my mind Hold on, Hold to Love Why don’t you hold on

Oh boy I’m cold Dunno why my daddy won’t let me Go steal some coal I suppose he’s scared they’ll get me Or maybe he thinks that it’s bad Not to take what you have and be glad You’re alive Oh boy I’m cold But that aint nothing new inside of this Tumble down hole It always has been so But now the snow and the frost’s on the ground And there aint enough food to go round And it’s Oh Oh boy I’m cold But so is mommy and daddy and granny And she’s getting old But I see in their eyes it’s okay For they’ve spent all their lives in this way Oh boy I’m cold And if I had some wood I’d take it And block up this hole Where the door don’t close And where the wind comes and laughs in my face Like it laughs at the whole human race As it if knows Oh boy I’m cold

Morgan Cleary Birmingham, UK

Dave Morgan and Jim Cleary played the local Birmingham folk clubs in the late 70s before they joined together, combining their individual song-writing styles into a new musical dynamic. Soon after being joined by guitarist Bob Daffurn, ELOs Richard Tandy heard their music and in late 1976, recorded this album of their songs, never released until now.
